How we research and score standby generators

We'd rather tell you exactly how our recommendations are made than imply something they aren't. Here's the process behind every guide, review and calculator on Backup Power Guide.

What we do (and don't do)

Backup Power Guide is a research-based buyer's guide. We don't run a lab, and our reviews are not hands-on tests. Instead, for every model we:

  • Start from the manufacturer's spec sheet: kW rating (and fuel derates), transfer switch, engine, noise, enclosure, warranty.
  • Cross-check with independent reviews from publications that do test hands-on, and note where their results differ from the marketing claims.
  • Read owner reports (forums, retailer reviews, support threads) for the problems that only show up after months of use: failed exercise cycles, dead crank batteries, ATS issues, support response times.
  • Flag uncertainty. When a spec can't be confirmed, or sources disagree, we say so rather than guess.

Each model page lists the sources we relied on.

How the 10-point score works

Every model gets four sub-scores, each out of 10:

  • Power: standby kW rating and how honestly it maps to real homes, accounting for fuel derates.
  • Reliability: engine pedigree, warranty length, dealer network density, and owner-reported failure modes.
  • Quietness: exercise-cycle and full-load noise figures, and how they compare in the class.
  • Value: typical street price against what you get, including the transfer switch and warranty.

The overall score is a weighted blend of the four, rounded to one decimal, plus small adjustments for reliability and support reputation. A 9+ is exceptional, 8–9 is a strong buy for the right yard, and under 7.5 means real compromises.

A higher score doesn't mean it's the right generator for you. A 9.0 flagship 26 kW unit is a bad buy for a 1,200 sq ft condo-adjacent home. That's why we built the kW size calculator.

Prices

Prices are typical US street prices at the time of our last update and are shown as ranges because generators are discounted and freight varies. Always check the current price on the retailer page.

Affiliate links and independence

Backup Power Guide is reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases made through our links, at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide which products we recommend or how they are ranked. Brands cannot pay for placement, and we don't accept free products in exchange for coverage.

Updates and corrections

We review our main buying guides at least quarterly and whenever a significant model launches. Each page shows its last-updated date. Spot an error? Tell usand we'll fix it.
