# Standby Generator Cold-Weather Kit: What You Need Before Winter
Updated October 29, 2026 By [Backup Power Guide Editorial Team](https://backuppowerguide.com/about/) [How we research](https://backuppowerguide.com/how-we-research/)

Prices are approximate and change often, so check the current price before you buy.

## Key takeaways

- **A cold-weather kit is a set of heaters, not one part.** Generac's manual lists a battery pad warmer, an oil warmer and a breather warmer as separate accessories, each sold separately.
- **The trigger temperature depends on the maker.** Generac's manual recommends a cold weather kit where temperatures fall below 32°F, and lists the battery and oil warmers as recommended below 0°F. Your own manual and dealer have the final word.
- **Some models are rated for deep cold as shipped.** Champion's spec sheet rates the 14kW aXis to start down to -22°F, and Cummins' spec sheet says the RS20A runs at 0°F out of the box, with cold-weather accessories for even colder sites.
- **Never let snow or ice block airflow.** Generac's manual warns against obstructing cooling and ventilating airflow, and exhaust contains carbon monoxide.
- **Propane needs a cold-weather plan of its own.** Vaporization slows as the tank gets colder and emptier, so tank size and level matter.

A generator that starts every week in September can still struggle on a very cold night in January if the battery is weak, the oil is stiff or the openings are packed with snow. This guide covers what a cold-weather kit is, how to find out whether your unit needs one, what to do about snow, and how to treat fuel and the exercise cycle in winter. The specifics come from Generac’s owner’s manual and our own model data. Where we have no data, we say to ask the maker or dealer.

## What is a standby generator cold-weather kit?

A cold-weather kit is a set of small heaters for the parts most affected by cold. There is no single standard kit. Generac’s manual lists the pieces separately under “Cold Weather Accessories”: a battery pad warmer, an oil warmer and a breather warmer, each sold separately.

- **Battery warmer or pad.** Cold makes it harder for a battery to crank the engine, and a pad keeps it warmer. Generac’s manual says the pad is not necessary with AGM-style batteries.

- **Oil warmer.** Cold oil is thicker and the engine turns harder. A warmer keeps it flowing.

- **Breather warmer.** Generac recommends this one in areas where heavy icing occurs.

Our [accessories page](https://backuppowerguide.com/accessories/) lists a universal cold-weather kit (battery warmer plus oil heater). The fit is generic, so match any kit to your exact model before ordering, and have it installed and powered as the manufacturer directs.

## Does your generator actually need one?

Start with the manual, not the product page. Generac’s manual for its 10 to 24 kW air-cooled generators says the unit is tested to UL 2200 with an operating temperature of -20°F to 122°F, and that a cold weather kit is recommended in areas where temperatures fall below 32°F. It then lists the battery and oil warmers as recommended below 0°F. Check the manual version that shipped with your unit, since this one does not cover every Guardian size.

What does our own data say about the models we cover?

| Model | What our data says about cold | Cold-weather kit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Champion 14kW aXis](https://backuppowerguide.com/generators/champion-14kw-axis/) | 24-volt starting system rated to -22°F (Champion spec sheet) | Not documented in the spec sheet; confirm with Champion |
| [Cummins QuietConnect RS20A](https://backuppowerguide.com/generators/cummins-rs20a/) | Runs at 0°F out of the box | Available, per Cummins’ spec sheet |
| [Kohler 20RESCL](https://backuppowerguide.com/generators/kohler-20rescl/) | Enclosure impact-tested to -30°F (this is an enclosure rating, not a starting rating) | Not in our data; ask the dealer |
| [Generac Guardian 22kW](https://backuppowerguide.com/generators/generac-guardian-22kw/) | See the Generac manual figures above | Documented for the Generac air-cooled line; confirm for your size |
| [Briggs & Stratton 20kW PowerProtect](https://backuppowerguide.com/generators/briggs-stratton-20kw/) | Not in our data | Confirm with the maker or dealer |

Our cold figures describe starting, not how a unit performs under load in a deep freeze. If your winters regularly sit below the maker’s recommended threshold, ask an authorized dealer which kit your model takes and whether it affects the warranty.

## What does the controller already do in the cold?

Generac’s manual describes a feature called Cold Smart Start. It is factory-enabled, and the generator monitors ambient temperature. If the temperature at startup in AUTO is below a fixed set point, the generator warms up for 30 seconds before a load is applied. Otherwise it uses the normal five-second warm-up delay. The manual gives the set point as 50°F for 10 to 20 kW units and 20°F for the 22 and 24 kW units.

Cold Smart Start is a warm-up delay. It does not warm a weak battery or thin out stiff oil, so it complements a cold-weather kit and does not replace one.

## How should I look after the battery?

Generac’s manual lists a field-supplied 12-volt Group 26R battery with a 540 CCA minimum, or a Group 35 AGM with a 650 CCA minimum, and its service schedule includes checking battery condition, electrolyte level and state of charge. Our [maintenance guide](https://backuppowerguide.com/posts/standby-generator-maintenance/) covers the annual battery test and when to replace it.

Charging needs care. Generac’s manual says a smart charger is built into the control panel and notes “Do not use external battery chargers.” Our accessories page lists a general battery maintainer, so on a Generac unit check your manual or ask the dealer before adding one. If the unit shows a charger or battery warning, call your dealer.

## What about the oil?

Generac’s manual says that in cold weather, with ambient temperatures below 40°F, the oil and filter should be changed every year or every 100 hours of operation. Use the viscosity your manual specifies. An oil warmer does not change the oil grade or the service interval.

## How do I clear snow and ice around the unit?

Generac’s manual warns not to obstruct cooling and ventilating airflow around the generator, since inadequate ventilation could cause a fire, equipment damage, injury or death. It also notes that running engines produce carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. In practice, a winter walk-around means:

- **Keep intake and exhaust openings clear.** Check the louvers on the enclosure sides after every storm, and look for drifts, ice crusts and icicles from the roof.

- **Do not pile shoveled snow against the enclosure.** Drifts and roof slides can bury a unit overnight.

- **Watch roof runoff.** The manual says to direct roof runoff and downspouts away from the enclosure.

- **Keep shrubs and tall grass at least 3 feet from the louvers.** That is the manual’s figure for vegetation. We could not source a manufacturer figure for snow, so follow your manual and installer on clearances.

- **Do not run the generator under a tarp or cover.** Remove any off-season cover before the weekly exercise.

- **Keep a working carbon monoxide alarm inside the house.** Generac’s manual calls for a battery-operated alarm installed according to the maker’s instructions.

If snow keeps piling up near the unit, ask your installer about the layout. Do not improvise a shelter. Installation and relocation should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local code, and a licensed electrician should do any wiring.

## Does the exercise cycle matter in winter?

Yes, but as a check, not a heater. Generac describes its air-cooled exercise as about five minutes, and the unit only exercises in AUTO with the timer set. Our [weekly exercise cycle explainer](https://backuppowerguide.com/posts/standby-generator-weekly-exercise-cycle-explained/) covers what each maker says. In winter, confirm the controller is in AUTO, listen for the start and check the display afterward for warnings. If the unit fails to start on a cold morning, call for service before the next storm.

## Natural gas or propane in the cold?

Neither fuel is a free pass.

Natural gas needs no tank and no refills. The risk sits upstream: it depends on the gas utility staying in service. Also check the derate. Generac’s manual says natural gas ratings depend on the fuel’s energy content and that typical derates run between 10 and 20 percent off the LP rating. Several models in our database also list lower natural gas figures, such as the Kohler 20RESCL at 18kW and the Champion 14kW aXis at 12.5kW.

Propane gives you your own supply, but it behaves differently in the cold. Propane must vaporize before the engine can burn it, and vaporization slows as the tank gets colder and emptier. That is why tank size and fill level matter more in winter. Our [propane tank size guide](https://backuppowerguide.com/posts/propane-tank-size-for-standby-generator/) works through the numbers and explains why a larger tank is cold-weather insurance. Keep the tank well filled going into winter.

## What is the winter readiness checklist?

Work through this list before the first hard freeze.

- **Read the cold section of your manual** and ask your dealer which kit fits your exact model.

- **Test the battery.** Replace an aging one now.

- **Fit the kit if your climate calls for it,** installed and powered as the manufacturer directs.

- **Service the oil on schedule,** using the grade your manual lists.

- **Walk the enclosure.** Clear leaves, trim shrubs back from the louvers and check the intake and exhaust openings.

- **Confirm AUTO and the exercise schedule,** especially after a power blip or battery change.

- **Check the fuel.** Top off propane, or confirm your natural gas service.

- **Clear the openings after each snowfall** and test your indoor carbon monoxide alarm.

## Which models make winter easier?

Pick for your climate and your fuel, then confirm cold-weather details with an authorized dealer.

Champion 14kW aXis. A 24-volt starting system rated to operate down to -22°F, per Champion’s spec sheet. At 14kW you choose circuits instead of backing up everything. [Check the current Champion 14kW listing on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B2TYMVB?tag=backuppowerguide.com-20).

Cummins QuietConnect RS20A. Runs at 0°F out of the box, with a cold-weather kit available for colder sites, per Cummins’ spec sheet. It is sold mainly through dealers, so ask the dealer about the kit when you get a quote.

Generac Guardian 22kW. Generac documents cold-weather accessories for its air-cooled line. Confirm with the dealer which kit your size takes. [Check the current Guardian 22kW listing on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DV1VGGW?tag=backuppowerguide.com-20).

Kohler 20RESCL. A composite enclosure impact-tested to -30°F, a rating for the enclosure and not for starting. Ask the dealer what cold-weather options exist for your unit. [Check the current Kohler 20RESCL listing on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0046AS0JS?tag=backuppowerguide.com-20).

## Bottom line

A cold-weather kit is a battery warmer, an oil heater and sometimes a breather warmer, and whether you need one depends on your model and your coldest nights. Generac recommends a kit below 32°F for its air-cooled line and the battery and oil warmers below 0°F, while the Champion 14kW aXis and Cummins RS20A are listed in our data as needing little or none. For every other model, ask the maker or an authorized dealer. Keep the openings clear of snow, never block exhaust, keep the battery healthy, and plan your fuel for the cold. Do it in October, while the ground is bare and the dealer has time. Check today’s price and terms before you buy any kit or generator.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is in a standby generator cold-weather kit?
It depends on the maker. Generac's manual lists cold weather accessories as a battery pad warmer, an oil warmer and a breather warmer, each sold separately. Third-party kits are often sold as a bundle, so check that the parts match your model and that the maker's warranty is not affected. Ask your dealer which pieces your unit takes.

### At what temperature do I need a cold-weather kit?
Generac's manual for its 10 to 24 kW air-cooled generators says the unit is tested to UL 2200 with an operating temperature of -20°F to 122°F, and that a cold weather kit is recommended where temperatures fall below 32°F. It lists the battery and oil warmers as recommended below 0°F. Other makers publish their own figures, so check your model's manual.

### Does my Champion, Kohler, Cummins or Briggs & Stratton generator need a cold-weather kit?
Champion's spec sheet rates the 14kW aXis to start down to -22°F, and Cummins' spec sheet says the RS20A runs at 0°F out of the box with a cold-weather kit available for colder sites. We do not have cold-weather kit details for the Kohler or Briggs & Stratton models in our database, so confirm with the manufacturer or an authorized dealer for your exact model and local lows.

### Does the weekly exercise cycle keep a generator warm in winter?
Treat it as a status check, not a heater. The exercise is a short run, and Generac describes its air-cooled exercise as about five minutes. It will reveal a weak battery or a fault while you can still fix it, but it is not a substitute for a kit if your climate calls for one.

### How far should I keep snow from a standby generator?
We could not source a snow-clearance distance from a manufacturer manual, so follow your own manual and installer. What Generac's manual does say is not to obstruct cooling and ventilating airflow, and to keep shrubs and tall grasses at least 3 feet from the intake and discharge louvers. Keep the intake and exhaust openings clear of snow and ice and never pile shoveled snow against the enclosure.

### Is natural gas or propane better in cold weather?
Neither is a clear winner. Natural gas needs no tank but depends on the utility staying up. Propane gives you your own supply, but vaporization slows as the tank gets colder and emptier, so tank size and fill level matter. Our propane tank guide has the numbers.
